Every residential solar installation comes with three distinct warranties, and most homeowners only ask about one of them. Here's the quick version before we get into the details:

  1. Product (materials) warranty — covers manufacturing defects and hardware failure. Standard is now 25 years, though what counts as a "defect" varies significantly by brand.
  2. Performance (power output) warranty — guarantees your panels produce a minimum percentage of their rated output over time. This is the number that most directly affects your electricity bill over 20+ years.
  3. Installation workmanship warranty — covers your installer's labor: roof penetrations, wiring, racking, and any damage from improper installation. This one is issued by your installer, not the panel manufacturer, and it's the most overlooked.

The warranty that protects you most is the one most likely to apply to your actual situation. Manufacturing defects are rare — modern panels fail more often from gradual degradation than from sudden hardware failure. That makes the performance warranty — and its fine print — the most financially consequential document you'll sign.

That said, if your installer goes out of business or your panels develop a mounting problem in year 8, the workmanship warranty becomes the only thing standing between you and a $4,000 out-of-pocket repair. Read all three.


Warranty Type 1: The Product (Materials) Warranty

The honest trade-off: SunPower is the most expensive panel on the market. Q Cells is one of the best-distributed brands in the US, with a strong manufacturing footprint in Georgia. Their 25-year product warranty is standard, and the brand has a track record of honoring claims at scale.

The catch: their performance guarantee floors out at 86% in year 25 — 6 percentage points below Panasonic and REC. On a 10kW system, that gap translates to roughly 600W of covered capacity difference at year 25. Over a decade of electricity bills at $0.15/kWh, that's real money.

Q Cells compensates with competitive pricing. Whether the lower performance floor is worth the cost savings depends on your system size and local electricity rates.

LONGi: Strong Long-Term Performance, Weaker Short-Term Product Coverage

LONGi makes some of the highest-efficiency panels available (their Hi-MO 6 line hits 23%+), but their 12-year product warranty is conspicuously shorter than competitors offering 25 years. The company extends a 30-year performance warranty, which sounds generous — but the 12-year product window means manufacturing defects discovered in year 15 are not covered.

LONGi panels are widely used in commercial installations and have a solid track record, but the asymmetry between product and performance warranty terms is unusual enough to flag.

LG: Good Panels, Complicated Warranty Situation

LG exited solar panel manufacturing in June 2022. Panels installed before that date remain under their original 25-year warranties, honored through an LG warranty fund. If you're buying a home with existing LG panels, confirm the installation date and verify warranty transfer terms directly with LG — the process is more manual than with active manufacturers.


The Hidden Gotchas in Solar Warranties

Knowing the headline numbers isn't enough. These are the warranty issues that actually catch homeowners off guard:

Manufacturer going out of business. The solar industry has seen significant consolidation and failures. Suntech, SolarWorld, and others left customers with worthless manufacturer warranties. The mitigation: choose brands with long operating histories and ask your installer whether the manufacturer carries warranty insurance. SunPower does; most others don't.

"25-year warranty" with a 12-year product window. LONGi is the most prominent current example, but this structure has appeared at other brands. Always distinguish product warranty length from performance warranty length — they can be different numbers.

Workmanship warranty held by a subcontractor. Some national installers subcontract the physical installation to local crews. If the workmanship warranty is held by the subcontractor entity rather than the national brand, you may have no recourse if the subcontractor closes.

  3. Is labor included in warranty replacements, or just the panel? Get this in writing.
  4. Is this warranty transferable if I sell my home? Some require formal transfer paperwork within a specific window after closing.
  5. What is your company's plan for warranty claims if you're acquired or close? An honest installer will have a thoughtful answer. Evasion is a flag.
  6. What's the performance degradation floor in your warranty, and is it linear or prorated? The number matters less than the model — linear is better.
  7. What's your documented process for filing a claim? How long does a typical claim take to resolve?
  8. Does my system's monitoring data feed into warranty claim evidence? Remote monitoring logs are often required for performance claims.
