New Jersey Just Passed Balcony Solar — What Renters Can (and Can't) Plug In Yet

That makes New Jersey the tenth state to pass a plug-in solar law, following Utah's first-in-the-nation version in 2025.
Two things matter more than the headline. First, this isn't law yet — it awaits Governor Sherrill's signature, and even after she signs it, the law doesn't take effect for another six months. Second, even once it's active, there's no fully UL 3700-certified plug-in solar product widely available in the U.S. right now to legally use it with. The law is ahead of the hardware. Here's what New Jersey actually passed, what's still missing, and what renters and condo owners can legally plug in today while the rest catches up.
What the Garden State Balcony Solar Act Actually Does
The bill defines "plug-in solar" as a small photovoltaic system — typically one or two panels wired to a microinverter — that connects to a standard home electrical outlet instead of going through a formal utility interconnection. Once the law is in effect, it will let anyone in New Jersey, tenant or owner, install a device rated up to 1,200 watts without applying for an electrical permit or getting sign-off from their utility first.
