How to Read Your Solar Monitoring App: Production, Consumption & Grid Export Explained

Your solar panels are producing electricity right now. Your monitoring app knows exactly how much — down to the watt, by the minute. But if the dashboard looks like a foreign language, you're not getting the most out of one of the best features of owning solar.
Here's the short version: three numbers matter most — production, consumption, and grid export. Once you understand what each one means and how they relate to each other, you'll be able to tell within 30 seconds whether your system is performing well, whether your utility bill will be low this month, and whether anything needs attention.

The Three Numbers That Run Your Solar Life
Every solar monitoring app — whether it's Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge mySolarEdge, Tesla Powerwall, or a third-party platform — is built around the same core data triangle:
- Production: How much electricity your solar panels are generating
- Consumption: How much electricity your home is actually using
- Grid export (or import): The difference — sent to the grid or pulled from it
Think of it like a checking account. Production is your income. Consumption is your spending. Grid export is your savings (sent back to the utility). Grid import is when you overdraft — pulling from the grid because the sun isn't covering your needs.

One thing Enlighten does well: microinverter-level data. If you have 20 panels, you can tap into each one and see its individual output. A panel producing significantly less than its neighbors is worth flagging — shading, soiling, or a failing microinverter can drag down overall output by more than you'd expect.
Reading SolarEdge mySolarEdge
SolarEdge uses a string inverter with power optimizers on each panel, and its monitoring app reflects that architecture.
The dashboard has a cleaner layout than Enlighten — a horizontal flow bar showing Solar → Home → Grid. Numbers update every 15 minutes (some installs update more frequently with a newer communication board).

Under traditional net metering, exporting to the grid was essentially "free money" — your utility credited you at the same rate you'd pay to import. That math has changed in many states.

Flat production for multiple days when your neighbors' systems are running fine: Could be a communication failure (the app isn't receiving data) or actual generation loss. Check the inverter's physical status light first.
